About

What is ATFS?

The American Tree Farm System is a nationwide network of individually, community, and family-owned small woodlands committed to sustainable forest management practices in natural and semi-natural planted forests. These practices ensure sustainable wood supplies, recreational opportunities, clean water, clean air, and other benefits both for their owners and the communities they live in. ATFS activities are coordinated on the ground by state-based programs, under a uniform structure and standards established by ATFS's national governing body, the American Forest Foundation.

History

Since 1941, Tree Farms have been telling the story that privately owned woodlands can make meaningful and lasting contributions to communities and society. Through the years the focus has shifted from industrial timberlands to woodlands owned by families and individuals, but the core values of managing land for a diversity of benefits has remained the same.

Recognition

Enrollment in ATFS begins with a forest management plan and visit with a forestry professional. Woodland owners who meet our internationally recognized standards of sustainability receive a sign and a certificate. That’s just a first step - those who participate in Tree Farm program activities, demonstrate a commitment to long-term management, and strive to support others on their journey to stewardship are eligible for state, regional, and national awards, as are the professionals who support them.

Staff

ATFS is supported by a small but mighty team of national staff who have deep ties to state Tree Farm programs. This team collaborates with state programs to set uniform national standards and processes, coordinates regional and national recognition awards, and provides generalized support for Tree Farm program implementation.
